Adoption Attitudes Inventory

Please answer the following questions openly and honestly.  Your answers will be used for your caseworker to get to know you better and to gain an understanding of where you are at in your understanding and attitudes about adoption and related issues.   Your caseworker will discuss your answers with you as well as any questions that may arise  while thinking through your answers. 

Husband and wife please answer separately and use as much space as you need. 

1. What are your reasons for wanting to adopt a child? 

2. How and when do you plan to tell your child that they were adopted?

3. Have you considered the possibility of your child wanting to search for his/her birthmother someday?  If this were to occur what would be your response?

4. In your opinion what would be reasons that a birthmother would have for placing her child for adoption?

5. How would you view a child that you adopted differently than a child that was born to you?

6. How do you feel about continuing contact with a birthmother by sending pictures and letters to her?  Why do you think a birthmother may request this?

7. How would you respond to you your child if as a teenager they tell you in anger, “You’re not my “real” Mom/Dad!”?

8. Do you think a child that you adopt should be disciplined any differently than a child that is born to you?

9. What books/articles have you read regarding adoption issues?

10. Is it important to you that a child you adopt resemble you physically?  Why or why not?
